Are Cats Receptive to Praise?

I have a cat daughter named Maria, who came as a package deal with my partner (Uncle) Aaron. Maria initially wanted to scratch my couch, which is very normal for a cat, however, we bought her a scratch post, praising her HEAVILY each time she’d use it, and giving her treats and catnip. Maria now looks at us as she makes her way toward the post, and awaits praise when she uses it. The post also doubles as her “safe” place, and she’s completely stopped scratching inappropriate places in the home.

Cats have emotions, and intelligence , and do respond to training and praise, just on a different level than dogs.

Per the site Simpsonspremium.com “Once you know what good behaviour you would like to encourage, start using positive reinforcement and treats to keep that behaviour going. Try and choose a flavour of treat your cat seems particularly keen on, as this will be more desirable for them. In addition, make sure to lavish them with praise if they do something correctly, as they will associate this action with being positive, given enough repetition.”

In some time, you’ll find you and your feline friend have a better bond through better communication!

Thank you, Ashley J. Hughes
